The first cooperative initiative in Basarabia
On April 22 1868, a group of citizens from Chișinău requested the competent authorities to establish a consumer society under the name “Сбережение”. It was created on the basis of the statute of a similar society in Odessa and aimed to improve the financial situation of its members by saving on the purchase of consumer goods.
The first consumer cooperative in Basarabia
In 1898, in the locality of Lihtental, Cetatea Albă County, the first consumer cooperative in Basarabia was established, based on the English Rochdale system. Between 1898 and 1904, three more consumer cooperatives were created on the territory of the region.
Founding of the Cooperative Technical School of Moldova
On September 29 1944, in the city of Soroca, the Moldovan Cooperative Technical School, now the Moldovan Cooperative College, was founded, an educational institution designed to train specialists for the cooperative sector. In 1959, the institution was transferred to Chișinău, becoming an important educational center in the field of consumer cooperation.
The First Congress of Consumer Cooperation
On March 23 1948, the first Congress of Consumer Cooperation in Moldova took place. The event established the structure and organization of the cooperative system, mentioning the existence of 60 district consumer associations, 472 village consumer associations, 12 interdistrict wholesale trade bases, 1,910 shops and kiosks, 350 public catering units and several production units.
International integration and the establishment of higher education
In September 1993, the Central Union of Consumer Cooperatives of the Republic of Moldova (Moldcoop) joined the International Cooperative Alliance, headquartered in Geneva, consolidating the external relations of the Moldovan cooperative system.
Also in this year, on June 24, the Cooperative-Commercial University of Moldova was founded, marking a key moment in the development of cooperative education in the country.
Establishment of the International Day of Cooperatives
In 1995, the United Nations (UN) declared the first Saturday in July as the International Day of Cooperatives, thus recognizing the importance of the cooperative movement globally.
Adoption of the Law on Consumer Cooperatives
The year 2000 marks the adoption of the Law on Consumer Cooperatives No. 1252 of 28-09-2000 in the Republic of Moldova, regulating the activity of this sector and providing a clear legal framework for the development and functioning of the cooperative system.
