What is a Consumer Cooperative?
A consumer cooperative is an associative form of economic organization, created based on the free will of its members, with the purpose of meeting their economic and social needs. It operates as a legal entity and carries out its activities in accordance with cooperative principles and the provisions of the current legislation.
The activity of a consumer cooperative is based on:
• Autonomy and self-management,
• The democratic leadership principle – each member has the right to one vote,
• Free and voluntary participation,
• Fair distribution of income,
• Mutual responsibility and solidarity among members.
Through their organization and operation, cooperatives not only provide benefits to members but also promote values such as solidarity, fairness, and mutual support – the foundations of the cooperative movement.
